Egret E"gret noun [ See Aigret , Heron .] 1. (Zoology) The name of several species of herons which bear plumes on the back. They are generally white. Among the best known species are the American egret ( Ardea, or Herodias, egretta ); the great egret ( A. alba ); the little egret ( A. garzetta ), of Europe; and the American snowy egret ( A. candidissima ).

2. A plume or tuft of feathers worn as a part of a headdress, or anything imitating such an ornament; an aigrette.

3. (Botany) The flying feathery or hairy crown of seeds or achenes, as the down of the thistle.

4. (Zoology) A kind of ape.

Egyptian bean . (Botany) (a) The beanlike fruit of an aquatic plant ( Nelumbium speciosum ), somewhat resembling the water lily. (b) See under Bean , 1. -- Egyptian cross . See Illust. (No. 6) of Cross . -- Egyptian thorn (Botany) , a medium-sized tree ( Acacia vera ). It is one of the chief sources of the best gum arabic.

Somateria mollissima , which breeds in the northern parts of Europe and America, and lines its nest with fine down (taken from its own body) which is an article of commerce; -- called also eider duck . The American eider ( S. Dresseri ), the king eider ( S. spectabilis ), and the spectacled eider ( Arctonetta Fischeri ) are related species.
