(= hypophysis) Possibly the most important of the vertebrate endocrine glands. Located below the brain to which it is attached by a stalk. Has two lobes, the anterior adenohypophysis and posterior neurohypophysis. Secretes a wide range of hormones including somatotropin, follicle-stimulating hormone, gonadotrophins, thyroid-stimulating hormone, lipotropinand many others. See Table H2.
