HIV protein that is important for pathogenesis, enhances infectivity and regulates the sorting of at least two cellular transmembrane proteins, CD4 and MHC Class I. Has a proline-rich sequence that interacts with Hck-SH3 domain and activates kinase activity of Hck; also interacts with a serine/threonine kinase of 62 kD. Nef itself has a sorting signal (ENTSLL) that functions as an endocytosis marker and it has some amino acid homology with alpha-scorpion toxins that bind to potassium channels.
