Global System for Mobile Communications. A Second Generation world standard for digital cellular networks (formerly Groupe Speciale Mobile). GSM network components are - MS (mobile station, the GSM phone, consisting of ME and SIM), BTS (base station), BSC / BSS, MSC (mobile switching centre, the mobile telephone exchange), HLR (home location register, the real-time subscriber database), AuC, EIR, SMSC, GWMSC and IWMSC. GSM supports two thirds of world mobile phone subscribers (according to GSM Association figures) and has experienced a rapid growth in SMS messaging in recent years. GSM is now being enhanced by GPRS and EDGE. UMTS is intended to be the Third Generation replacement for GSM. Other Second Generation systems include IS-136 (TDMA), IS-95 (CDMA) and PDC. First Generation systems include AMPS, TACS and NMT.
