Blast Protected StructuresStructures constructed in materials that are designed to withstand explosive attack.
British StandardDocument issued by British Standards Institution.
Brittle FractureLoss of ductility and strength associated with low temperatures and imperfections
Black BoltsNormal bolts, usually with no corrosion protection, and grade 4.6.
BilletSmall steel ingot produced for passing through a sections rolling mill.
Bi-SteelA Corus- patented high performance construction material comprising two steel plates that are permanently connected by transverse bars to form panels which are then filled with ready-mixed concrete.
Backing StripA piece of steel used to help form a sound root to a weld.
BackmarkStandard dimensions for drilling holes in angle legs and channel flanges measured from the corner of the angle across the leg to the hole centre. See standard tables.
Bending MomentThe bending moment due to a force (or system of forces) at a cross section is given by the algebraic sum of all moments to one side of the section.
Back To BackDescription of a compound member composed of two angles or channels, adjacent legs or webs fixed together with or without spacers.
AxialRelating to the longitudinal axis of a member - (axial load, axial tension, axial compression).
Back GougingThe removal of poor quality root material by disc grinding or arc-air.
AssemblyPrefabricated frame forming a part, or the whole, of a structural frame system.
ArchPrincipal load carrying member curved in elevation. Resistance to applied loading, developed by axial thrust and bending. (Two pinned, three pinned, fixed.)
ApexHighest point on a highest point on a pitched roof (crown, ridge).
Arc-AirAlmost the reverse of welding - an electric arc is formed between work piece and the carbon electrode, and compressed air blasts away the molten metal.
Anti-Attack Vehicle BarriersDesigned to control or prevent vehicle access and to provide protection from explosive attack.
AngleL shaped hot rolled or cold rolled section having equal or unequal legs (Hot Rolled Angles, see BS4848: Part 4).
AnchorageProvision of resistance to overturning. Resistance provided by foundations. (Anchor bolt mechanical link between structural frame and foundation.)
