Mucous membrane that lines the uterus and that thickens during the menstrual cycle ready for implantation of the embryo. If implantation does not occur the endometrium returns to its previous state and the excess tissue is shed at menstruation. If implantation does occur the endometrium becomes the decidua and is not shed until after parturition.
