bond by which a person engages before court to observe some condition, especially appearance at higher court (P 205); written record of a bailed offender and his pledges, taken by the verderers (M 215 (v))
A legal document which required an individual to perform an obligation, or pay a large penalty if they failed to do so. Usually the obligation was to appear in court; sometimes it was to be of good behaviour for a specified period of time. Normally guaranteed with sureties.
An undertaking before the Court by which a person agrees to comply with a certain condition, e.g. keep the peace/appear in court. A sum of money is normally pledged to ensure compliance
