A group of antibiotics produced by various strains of Streptomyces that have a complex macrocyclic structure. They inhibit protein synthesis by blocking the 50S ribosomal subunit. Include erythromycin, carbomycin. Used clinically as broad-spectrum antibiotics, particularly against Gram positive bacteria.
