This was a gladiator, who was also known as a Gaul, and in Imperial times as a murmillo. A gladiator who fought with similar armour to the Samnite, and possibly originated in Cisalpine Gaul (the part of ancient Gaul south of the Alps of northern Italia). They were gradually replaced by the murmillo, with his distinctive fish-shaped helmet crest.
