Figure in timber or veneer produced by small, regular undulations in the grain
Figure which is produced by wavy grain when quarter sawn. It appears as a rippled effect on the surface, eg ripple maple/sycamore. The term has come into use because such wood with this figure has traditionally been used for the backs of violins.
