A chiaus is a Turkish messenger or herald. In the early 17th century a Turkish conman claiming to be a chiaus from the Sultan obtained free hospitality on the strength of his claim, which when the swindle was discovered led to the adoption of the slang term chouse for a cheat or swindler.
