Bovine spongiform encephalopathy. A transmissible encephalopathy that affected large numbers of cattle in the UK during the 1990s and is widely believed to have arisen through consumption, by cattle, of feedstuff containing sheep tissues from animals with scrapie. A link with ‘new variant CJD` is strongly suspected.
