Case or box for ‘vestas` - the friction matches of wax or wood that preceded the safety match. The cases were produced from the second half of the 19thC usually in silver and other metals, but also in a variety of materials such as porcelain and papier-mâché. Pocket-sized and larger table versions were made later, often in novelty shapes.
