This is the term for when a distillery is closed but is able to be reopened. It is not as extreme as being completely closed, and really means that a distillery might re-open.
A term used to describe something which is no longer used. Bruichladdich was mothballed in 1994 for 6 years before being bought over by a group of pioneering private investors in 2000 who built the ethos and values which the distillery still stands for today.
If a distillery has been mothballed it means it has closed down production whilst preserving production machinery and facilities for possible future use.
