Lightermen were persons employed to man lighters, the flat bottomed boats used to load and unload vessels at docks or elsewhere in the days before cranes. Thames lightermen were licensed after an apprenticeship and oral examination, by the Watermen and Lightermen Company, a body which was incorporated in 1827.
