High Speed Downlink Packet Access. A later-phase UMTS technique to enhance downlink packet data rates for streaming, interactive and background services in 3G UMTS systems. HSDPA uses adaptive modulation, HARQ (hybrid ARQ), MIMO and multi channel SAW to improve throughput, reduce delay and achieve high peak rates to support services like video streaming (see 3GPP 25.308). The achievable bit rates depend on the modulation chosen but range from about 700kbps to 10mbps and higher.
