Lymphocyte surface protein originally described as being an essential cofactor for HIV bound to CD4 to fuse with and enter the cell, later shown to be a chemokine receptor (CXCR4 in the case of lymphotropic virus strains, CCR5 for myelotropic strains). Since FIV will infect CD4-cells it is possible that the chemokine receptor is the original binding site and CD4 the co-receptor, rather than the converse.
