Gene that encodes an enzyme that degrades or excretes an antibiotic, so conferring resistance. Frequently found in cloning vectors like plasmids, and sometimes in natural populations of bacteria. Example: bacterial ampicillin resistance is conferred by expression of the beta-lactamase gene.
