[Māori concept] Utu is a Māori concept of reciprocation, or balance. To retain mana, both friendly and unfriendly actions require an appropriate response - hence utu covers both the reciprocation of kind deeds, and the seeking of revenge. In Sumerian mythology, Utu was the sun god and god of justice. He was the son of Nanna and Ningal. He goes to the underworld at the end of every day setting in the mountain of the west and rising in the mountain of the east. While in the underworld he decrees the fate of the dead.
