A Tonton Macoute was a member of the Haitian paramilitary force created in 1959 by dictator François `Papa Doc` Duvalier. The Tonton Macoute were (are?) a private army of death squads on Haiti initially organised by the president, Francois Duvalier, president of Haiti they continued to terrorise the population under his successor J C Duvalier. It is alleged that the organisation continued to operate after Duvalier' s exile to France.
