The Sussex was a British steamship of the LB & SC Railway. She was torpedoed by a German submarine in the English Channel during her passage from Folkestone to Dieppe on March the 24th 1916 with the loss of fifty lives. The presence of American citizens on board the Sussex when she was attacked contributed to the USA's entry into the Great War.
