
(In topic `Network Architectures`) SS7 (Signaling System 7) is a telecommunications protocol defined by the ITU that is characterised by high-speed packet switching. It is used in the US telephone system to set up calls and enable new transaction services such as caller ID.

The ITU Common Channel Signaling System Number 7 - a set of low level protocols used to control activities in telecommunications networks. SS7 is used in both fixed and mobile networks and is the basis for GSM MAP, IS-41, IN and their derivatives. Some SS7-like functionality has begun to appear in Internet protocols to support VoIP (voice over IP). An example is SIP (session initiation protocol).
