A UTRA Radio Network controller in the UMTS 3G system. Each RNC is a CRNC (Controlling RNC) to several base stations (called Node B in UTRA) via the Iub interface. The CRNC and its Node Bs is a RNS (Radio Network Subsystem). The RNC is the connection point from UTRA to the CN (the UMTS core network) via the Iu interface. A UMTS UE (mobile) may be in communication with several RNCs (see SRNC and DRNC) as part of soft handover (a spatial diversity process). The RNCs communicate using the Iur interface. ...
