The Pyroscaphe was the second steamship built by the Marquis de Jouffroy d'Abbans and was one of the earliest experimental steam vessels to give a working demonstration, being demonstrated in 1783 on the Saone river. The Pyroscaphe had a displacement of 163 tons and was powered by double-acting sidewheels and carried a crew of three.
