The red grape variety is an open flowered seedling of the American Clinton vine. Thus, at least genes of Vitis riparia x Vitis labrusca are contained. The hybrid was selected in 1870 by the private breeder J. H. Ricketts. It is used as a wine press and table grape. In 2016 no stock was reported (Kym Anderson).
