The Open Systems Interconnect family of specifications, an attempt by the ISO to dictate TelCo style networking standards for non-existent products. Taken up by the U.S. Government in the form of GOSIP (Government OSI Purchasing/Profile), this initiative failed when only two US manufacturers came up with non-interoperable products. (In topic `Network Architectures`) OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) is the 7 layer hierarchical reference model developed by the ISO for defining, specifying and relating communications protocols. The model itself is not a standard or a protocol. Found on http://www.encyclo.co.uk/local/20477
The Open Systems Interconnection reference model divides network functions into protocol layers, each layer dependent and building on the services of the layer beneath it. The OSI model is important for the principles of protocol layering and service interfaces and for definitions such as ASN.1 (part of OSI, but used in other protocols such as GSM). OSI failed to become the world framework for communications but many of its ideas live on in the more recent IPS standards.
