Multi Protocol Label Switching
Multi Protocol Label Switching - IETF standard (MultiProtocol Label Switching Architecture, RFC 3031) adds routing and priority to packets transmitted across IP, ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) and FR (frame relay) networks allowing low and predictable delay for time-critical traffic such as VoIP (Voice over IP). Labels determine the FEC (forwarding equivalence class) and are assigned at network entry and re-assigned for each routing hop (similar to logical channels in a VC network like X.25).
