Janissaries logo #21217The Janissaries were a body of Turkish infantry formed about 1330 as the Sultan's bodyguard. They were originally composed chiefly of Christian captives, who were compelled to profess Islam. They were disbanded in 1826 after a number of revolts against the sultans.
