Hopkinsianism was the doctrine advocated by Samuel Hopkins, minister at Newport, USA from 1770, as an addition to Calvinism, that holiness consisted in pure, disinterested benevolence, and that all self-seeking was necessarily sinful. It exerted a liberalizing influence on the theology of the day.
