Frame relay is a standardized wide area network technology that specifies the physical and logical link layers of digital telecommunications channels using a packet switching methodology. Originally designed for transport across Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) infrastructure, it may be used today in the context of many other network int...

Error checking is handled by devices at both sides of the connection. Frame relay uses frames of varying length and it operates at the data link layer of the OSI model. A permanent virtual circuit (PVC) is established between two points on the network. Frame relay speed is between 56Kbps and 1.544Mbps.

(In topic `Network Architectures`) Frame Relay is a high speed packet-switching protocol for connecting devices on a WAN and is much faster than X25 networks. It has become the dominant method for wide area interconnection of corporate enterprise networks. Unlike X25, Frame Relay has become a major wide area technology in the USA partly due to ...

Packet-based virtual circuit data communication protocol similar to X.25 but assuming lower BER and improving performance by reducing error protection. The basic unit transmitted is a variable length frame, rather than a fixed length cell, in contrast with ATM.

A packet-switching wide-area technology for interconnecting LANs at high speeds. Defines the interface between user equipment and a WAN, but does not define internal operation of the network or the interfaces or protocols used within the WAN itself. For this reason, the term 'frame relay cloud' is often used to describe the internal operation of a ...

Industry-standard, switched data link layer protocol that handles multiple virtual circuits using HDLC encapsulation between connected devices. Frame relay is more efficient than X.25, the protocol for which it is generally considered a replacement. See also X.25.
