(RO- M+) alkoxide ion. An ionic compound formed by removal of hydrogen ions from the hydroxyl group in an alcohol using reactive metals, e. g. sodium. For example, potassium metal reacts with methanol (CH3OH) to produce potassium methoxide (KOCH3).
