Embroidery Tote

Embroidery Needle
These sharp and pointed needles are generally used for standard embroidery and are referred to as crewel needles.

Embroidery Hoop
Two hoops made out of wood or metal. They fit inside each other and secure your material while stitching. They can be purchased in round or oval shapes.

Daylight Bulb
These type of light bulbs are generally used to illuminate your project.

DMC
Producer and manufacturer of floss. Many of the pattern designers use DMC colors on their charts.

Double Running Stitch
Also known as the Holbein Stitch. This is stitching a row of running stitches in a set direction and coming back in the opposite directions to fill in the gaps.

Double Cross Stitch
Making the standard `X” in the material and then making a `+” over the top of the previous stitch to form a star.

Cross Stitch
a form of embroidery stitch made up of two diagonal stitches to form an X

Cross Stitch
Part of the embroidery family that consist of making x’s or crosses as the designing element. There are other types of stitches also used to achieve the designs.

Technique that involves tacking down a fiber on top of the material to create curves and circles in your design.

Count
This refers to the number of holes or threads in one linear inch. The popular Aida fabric can be purchased in 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18, while Evenweave is bought in 24, 26, 27, 28, 30 or 32.

To secure the thread while stitching, it is also the name of a floss manufacturer.

Assisi Embroidery
A technique where the background is filled with cross stitch, while the main motif is left blank.

Basting Stitch
Long, loose stitches sometimes used to find the center of a piece of fabric.

Aida
A brand of fabric that is used for cross stitching purposes. It comes in several counts and the material is woven so that it has tiny holes separating each individual square.

Aida Band
Usually found near the edges of place mats, towels, tea towels, napkins and bread covers.

Acid Free Mounting Board
This is the most popular mounting board, because it is acid free, it will not discolor the fabric over time.
