Civil Court
a court that only hears civil cases – no criminal cases are heard.

Civil Clerk s Office
the office that handles the filing of civil cases.

Civil Action Number
a number assigned to each case by the Clerk s Office. This number must be found on all documents filed in a case to help the Clerk s Office keep a record of all papers in the case. Usually begins with the year, then initials identifying the type of case, the case number and the judge s initials in some instances. An example is: 99 – CVD – 00000 (XYZ).

Civil Case
any case that does not involve criminal charges.

Child Support
action for funds to support a minor child or children.

Child Custody Mediation
a meeting of the parents and a trained mediator to assist the family in making decisions regarding child custody instead of going to court and allowing the judge to determine custody.

Biological Father
the natural father of a child.

Bulky disease
Any cancer that measures greater than ten centimeters in any dimension.

Centigrey or cGy
A measurement of radiation dose absorbed by the body.

Child Custody
action requesting the court to determine the legal and physical custody of a child or children. May be between natural parents and other parties such as grandparents.

Ascending colon
The portion of colon that begins in the lower right part of the abdomen, departing from the end of the small intestine. It rises on the right side up to the rib cage, where it turns to cross under the liver as the transverse colon.

Arbitration
a proceeding where parties bring their dispute to a neutral third party and agree to abide by his/her decision. Similar to court case since each party can present evidence, but not as formal, and heard by an arbitrator and not a judge.

Appellee
the other party to an appeal who has not requested the review of the court s decision.

Appellant
the person who appeals the decision of a court.

Appeal
when a party to a court case asks a higher court to review a judge s decision from a lower court.

Answer
the Defendant s response to a complaint filed by the Plaintiff.

Anemia (an KNEE me uh)
A lack of adequate numbers of oxygen-carrying red blood cells.

Annulment
a case brought seeking to declare marriage void. This is a legal action and not the type sought for religious reasons. Grounds for annulment must have existed at the time of the marriage and include: bigamy, kinship, underage, impotency, false representation of pregnancy, incompetence, or duress.

Anecdotal
When used in a medical context does not mean a funny story. It means a single case report not yet substantiated by studies using large numbers of people.

Anastomosis (eh nas teh MOW sis)
The rejoining of two ends of tissue after a portion of the tissue between them has been removed.

Affidavit
a document containing information the person swears to be true. Usually sworn to in the presence of a Notary Public.

Alternate Dispute Resolution
ways to determine a case without going to court. Examples include mediation, arbitration, and conciliation.

Alimony
support paid to dependent spouse - designed to enable dependent spouse to maintain the standard of living experienced during the marriage. Can be requested in a divorce action or in action for alimony without divorce, but must be requested prior to the entry of a final order of divorce.

Affiant
the person who swears to the Notary Public that his/her statement or documents are true.

Acknowledgment
statement of an acceptance of responsibility.

Adenoma (ad en OH muh)
A polyp; an initially benign growth that forms in the colon from the innermost layer of mucin-producing epithelial cells.

Adenopathy (ad en AH path ee)
The enlargement of lymph glands. Its presence in a colorectal cancer survivor might suggest the spread of cancer to the lymphatic system.

Acceptance of Service
when the Defendant in a case agrees to the proceedings and will not require the papers to be served upon him/her.
