CRTCathode Ray Tube. Another term for monitor, receiver or computer screen.
Cut-outA precision formation hot-wire cut from a block of foam. A case might have multiple cut-outs for anything from camera lenses, microphones, fittings, or any small item needing isolation.
CPUCentral Processing Unit. The brains of a computer.
CompartmentA partitioned area within a case for isolating attachments or accessories.
ConceptualizeThe ability to visualize something being verbally described.
CouplerA device for attaching multiple cases together.
Common CarrierA freight carrier who hauls all types of common freight to various geographic locations.
Clip NutThe clip that snaps onto STAR CASE untapped rack rail. This clip has a 10-32 nut which aligns with the 1/4' holes in the untapped rack rail. If it ever strips, pop it off and replace it with a new one in seconds.
Combination FoamWhen two types or densities of polyfoam and/or polyethylene foam are bonded together with adhesives to create varying cushioning effects, Combination Foam is the result.
ClamshellA two piece lid. See Style 'CS-3' & 'CS-4' in Custom Reference Guide for further description.
ClaimNecessary procedures to be compensated for rework or replacement of case damaged by freight carrier.
Cavity Cut-outA space which has been cut-out, typically, directly beneath the item being encased. Commonly used for storage of cables and owners manuals.
CasterAnother term for wheel.
CasterboardPlywood panel which is mounted directly between the bottom of the case and the casters steel mounting plates. Intended as a shock isolator and disbursement device.
Carry StarTrade name for STAR CASE light-duty, surface travel case line. Intended as a sturdy carrying case, not an ATA compliant shipping case.
Carry LightTrade name for Star Case light-duty, surface travel case line. The outer walls of Carry Light are a specially extruded fluted high density polyethylene (HDPE) available in black only. Carry Light cases have surface mount hardware fittings and are much lighter in weight than any other Star Case type. See also, Star Light.

BlockingThe act of providing wood or foam support for encased items. Blocking increases the effectiveness of case interiors.

BaseThe lower portion of a case which would sit flat on the ground when being loaded.
Ball-bearingA series of metal balls mounted in a grease-filled circular RACE encasement. Use of ball-bearing races allows casters to swivel either horizontally or vertically.
ATA StarTrade name for STAR CASE built to the ATA Specification, built of 1/4' or 3/8' Fiberglass laminated to ACX plywood.
ATAAir Transport Association of America. Federal organization responsible for setting guidelines for testing of cases and containers. The ATA has set the standards for commercial airline shipping cases and containers.
Anti-Static FoamPolyfoam or polyethylene foam materials, specially treated, to render them non-conductive to the negative effects of static electricity. Excellent for PC boards & magnetic media cushioning.
AngleCommon term for the aluminum material which is used as an outer corner covering on shipping cases.
ACXDesignation for a particular grade of plywood as is recognized by the American Plywood Association.

ABSAcrylonitrile-Butadiene Styrene. A styrene plastic material used as an outer laminate for shipping cases.
W x D x HAbbreviation for Width, Depth and Height.
T-BShort form for Top-to-Bottom, commonly meaning 'height'.
O.D.Outside Dimensions, typically, edge-to-edge.
O.D. Ball-to-Ball'Outside Dimension, Ball Corner to Ball Corner.' Due to the fact the ball corners are rounded and protrude from the outer angles of the case, sometimes you'll need to know the O.D. from Ball-to-Ball.
L-RShort for Left-to-Right, commonly meaning 'Width'.
F-BShort for Front to Back. Commonly means, 'Depth'.
I.D.Abbreviation for Inside Dimension.
E.I.A. Electronics Industries of America. Common term to refer to rackmount cases and their vertical hole spacing.
E.I.A.Electronics Industries of America. Common term to refer to rackmount cases and their vertical hole spacing.
wwwAn Anacronym standing for World Wide Web. The international network of web sites (URL's) accessible through your local internet service provider.
Wood-to-WoodA critically important dimension inside a case as contrasted with Foam-to-Foam or Valance-to-Valance. Generally refers to the cases overall Top-to-Bottom height.
WebA shortened way of referencing the World Wide Web.
VinylA thin material used to line STAR CASES. For certain applications, vinyl can be bonded to various foam densities to isolate contents from contacting inner foam lining.
VelourLong napped material used for cushioning over foam. Often selected for its aesthetic appearance.
Velcro3 Hook-and-LoopSpecial material used for positive closure of interior trap doors, compartments, and as hold-downs and restraints inside case.
Valance Spanning CatchA variation on the standard butterfly catch. This catch doesn't require routing-out of the valance to install
