URL
An anacronym standing for Universal Resource Locater. Synonymous with our address on the World Wide Web. Example: Star Cases' URL is http://www.starcase.com

Untapped
The alternative choice to Tapped Rack Rail. As described under CLIP NUTS previously, untapped rack rail has EIA standard spaced 1/4' holes which employ a specialized clip nut. The advantages of Untapped Rack Rail over Tapped is the ease of dealing with stripped threads. One simply needs to replace a clip, not an entire rail.

Ultra Star
Trade name for STAR CASE premium grade 1/2' construction case. Manufactured of only the finest materials such as clear anodized T-5 aluminum, extra deep draw tongue and groove valance, horizontal as well as vertical support corner clamps, and premium grades of plywood, fiberglass, and fittings throughout.  Intended for the largest and most critical case loads.

Twist Catch
A variation on the standard recessed butterfly, spring-loaded catch employing a D-ring and hasp for lockability. Padlock not included.

Tool-Tech
Generic STAR CASE name for Technician's Tool Cases, a standard design in several configurations for STAR CASE.

Tongue-and-Groove
A generic term for the male and female valance extrusion which forms the closure of a STAR CASE.

Tie-Down Ring
A steel member which permanently attaches to STAR CASES for use as a tie-down while case is in transit.

Template
The pattern from which a die-cut or sculptured interior comes.

Tapped
The alternative to untapped rack rail. STAR CASE tapped rack rail is tapped to 10-32, which is the standard screw size used throughout the electronics industry for rackmount and EIA use.

Swivel
The action of a caster on the horizontal plane. This is a standard definitive word for a particular option of STAR CASE Caster. Alternative to a swivel caster is a rigid caster.

Surface Mount
As contrasted to something mounted in a recessed fashion into the case surface.

Super Star
Trade name for STAR CASE premium grade of 1/4' construction case. Manufactured of only the finest materials such as clear anodized T-5 aluminum, extra deep draw tongue and groove valance, horizontal and vertical support corner clamps, and  premium grades of plywood, fiberglass, and fittings throughout.

Stucco Finish
A term describing the textured pattern finish of the outer panels of a Star Case. The stucco panel finish, as contrasted with a smooth panel surface, maintains an extended professional appearance, while maximizing resistance to case abuse in transit.

Stencil
A pre-cut block or logo rendering of letters or images to be transferred to the case surface. See also Logo.

Star Light
Trade name for Star Case light-duty case line. The outer walls of Star Light are a specially extruded fluted high density polyethylene (HDPE) available in black only. Star Light cases have recessed hardware fittings and are much lighter in weight and less expensive to ship than any other Star Case type. See also, Carry Light.

Standard Catch
The standard arrangement of a heavy-duty twist catch as mounted on a Star Case. Anything deviating from the standard arrangement, which varies from case style and type, constitutes a 'reverse' catch. See also, Reverse Catch.

Standard
A 'standard' at STAR CASE is a case design we've built many times before.

Style "F-6"
STAR CASE 'Mixer/E.I.A. Rackmount Case' with removable top lid and hinged front lid with both front rackable space and flat top storage space. Slanted rack rail is also available on 'F-6' styles.

Style "F-5"
STAR CASE 'Mixer/ E.I.A. Rackmount Case' with removable top lid and front lid with both front and slanted top rackable space. A top shelf is also available on' F-5' styles.

Style "F-4D"
STAR CASE 'Double-wide Removable Front and Rear Lid' Shockmounted E.I.A. Rack Style.

Style "F-4"
STAR CASE 'Removable Front and Rear Lid' Shockmounted E.I.A.  Rack Style. See 'shockmount' in this glossary.

Style "F-3"
STAR CASE 'Pull-Over Removable Lid' Shockmounted E.I.A. Rack Style with front, rear, and top access. Shell is enclosed in a 1' foam lined case. Shell rack rails are mounted in an angle in top portion of the inner wood shell.

Style "F-2"
STAR CASE 'Pull-Over Removable Lid' Shockmounted E.I.A. Rack Style with front and rear access only shell enclosed in a 1' foam lined case.

Style "F-1D"
STAR CASE 'Double-wide, Front and Rear Removable Lid' E.I.A. Rackmount Style.

Style "F-1"
STAR CASE 'Front and Rear Removable Lid 'E.I.A. Rackmount Style.

Style "F-0"
E.I.A. rack shell only.

Style "X"
STAR CASE style for 'Expo STAR'. A telescopic lid style primarily for tradeshow and exhibit use.

Style "FF"
STAR CASE style for removable front & rear lid case with foamed interior for non-rackmountable items.

Style "E-4"
STAR CASE style for 'Hinged Lid Roll-In' case with 4' hinged  front lid.

Style "E-3"
STAR CASE style for 'Removable Lid Roll-In' case with 3' removable front lid.

Style "D-3"
STAR CASE style for 'Removable 3' lid' case.

Style "CS-3" or "CS-4"
STAR CASE style for 'Removable 2-Part Clamshell Lid' cases. 'CS-3' is for 3' base and 'CS-4' is for 4' base.

Style "CM"
STAR CASE style for 'Removable Lid-split in the middle' cases.

Style "B-3" or "B-4"
STAR CASE style for 'Removable Pull-Off lid' cases. 'B-3' has 3' base, 'B-4' has 4' base.

Style "A"
STAR CASE style for 'Hinged Lid' cases.

Skid
The employment of 3' x 3-1/2' wooden beams on the under-side of a case to both elevate the case from the ground surface and to provide an ample target for forklift blade beneath the case. Skids are options on any STAR CASE, size permitting.

Shockmount
A word used to define an 'F-2', 'F-3', or 'F-4' STAR CASE Rackmount case. An 'F-4' is a rack shell packaged within a front and rear removable lid outer case. Two inches of foam isolate the inner shell from the outside case. 'F-2' style differs only in the fact that it has 1' of foam isolation instead of 2' and removable 'B-3' or 'B-4' style outer case.

Server
The computer within which a URL or e-mail system resides. American-0n-Line, Gemini, IMConline, Delphi, MSN, etc., are Servers from which you access the entire World Wide Web, or Internet.

Second-Day Air
Ship it by a specified time on Monday and your package should arrive by a specified time on Wednesday.

Search Page
Within the Star Case World Wide Web site, this page is like a table of contents. From the Search Page, you can proceed to a specific area of interest or proceed methodically through the various sections to receive extensive information of Star Case.

Search Engine
Applications within the World Wide Web that help direct you to your specific area of interest. Example: Yahoo, Infoseek, Lycos, Alta Vista, etc.

Sculptured
Definitive word for a precision foam cut-out as accomplished via hot wire. Sculptured foam typically has very few right angles, mostly curves.

Roller Glide
Mechanical device which attaches either to drawers, shelves, or other case components for providing smooth relatively effortless access.

Rigid
Word used to define one particular type of STAR caster. Rigid casters do not revolve horizontally, only roll vertically. As opposed to STAR CASE Swivel casters.

Rear-Mounted
Usually refers to additional E.I.A. rack rail which is the metal angle used for attaching electronic components into rackmount cases. Both front and rear rack rail will be of use, especially when glides or rear-mounted items are needed.

Red Label
United Parcel Service's answer to Next Day Air. Ship it by a specified time on Monday and your package will arrive by a specified time on Tuesday.

Rectangular Cut-Out
A cut-out similar to a Pattern Cut-Out, however, the pattern used is always a square or rectangular shape with no template required. Typically, multiple rectangular cut-outs are needed for battery packs, walkie-talkies, PC boards, etc.

Reverse Catch
When the standard arrangement of the standard latch is reversed 180°. Large half (portion with twist mechanism) of the recessed dish is mounted to the upper section of the case and the smaller, strike portion, is mounted to the lower section.

Ramp
A slanted attachment option to STAR CASE Style 'E' cases for increasing the accessibility in and out of the case. STAR CASE ramps typically store in the front hinged or removable lid.

Rack Shell
E.I.A. rack closure excluding lids or attachments. See style F0.

Rack
A term for an E.I.A. compatible closure for holding rackmount (19' width) components.

Protrusion
Something that sticks out. Often referred to in case drawing and dimension gathering. Protrusions might be small micro switches, fuse holders, or hard rubber feet protruding from the surface of an item.

Prototype
'One of a kind' item, typically, the first article. It's a good practice where multiple cases are concerned, to purchase a 'prototype' before ordering a quantity of the same item.

Polyethylene
Rigid, higher density foam material ideally suited for items with higher concentrations of weight.

Poly
Shortened form of Polyfoam, Esterfoam or Polyester foam. This is the soft foam.

Plush
Short napped material available as a lining for STAR CASES.

Pattern Cut-Out
A special cut-out made in foam-filled case to provide a sculptured area for an item or multiple items to rest. Typically, pattern cut-outs are created with a hot wire cutting device. A template is used to provide the pattern for the cut-out. See also Sculptured & Hot Wire.

Partition
Can be a plywood or polyethylene separator within a case. Plywood partition is braced and supported, by a double-edged aluminum extrusion. STAR CASE plywood partitions are 1/8' to 3/4' in thickness. They are capped with vinyl, foam or aluminum. STAR CASE polyethylene foam partitions are 1' or 2' in thickness.

Pallet
A wood or other composite material used to facilitate handling by forklifts and other mechanical devices. See also Skid.

Orange Label
Third Day shipment by UPS. Ship Monday, arrive Thursday.

Non-Protruding
Another term for flush mount or recessed.

Next-Day Air
Refers to an air carriers ability to 'ship today to arrive tomorrow.'

Netscape Navigator
A universally used and commercially marketed browser application owned by Netscape Corporation. One of several broadly used applications that allows a person to access the World Wide Web.

Logo
An artistic representation of a company's name which defines it graphically. See also Stencil.

Lid-Stay
A device used at the joining of the base and lid of the case to prevent lid from extending further than 90 degrees. Available as an option in steel or STAR's standard 1-1/2' nylon strapping.

Lid
Opposite of the base of the case, commonly the upper portion of the case. E.I.A. rackmount cases often have front and rear lids or front and top lids.

Laminate
The outer material bonded to Plywood.

Layout
The pattern you would like the interior of your case to follow.

Internet Explorer1
A universally used and commercially marketed browser application owned by Microsoft Corporation. One of several broadly used applications that allows a person to access the World Wide Web.

Internet
Inter, meaning from one to the other and net, short for network, being the accumulation of all accessible sites available. Example: FTP (File Transfer Protocol), News Net (for accessing News Groups), Chat Services, etc.

Indoor-Outdoor Carpet
Often referred to as I/O carpet. This is a tight-nap Ozite4 carpet used to line cases.

http://
Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A universal language used for most transfer functions from a host computer back and forth between those accessing its information.

html
An anacronym standing for Hypertext Markup Language. The accepted computer language used in the development of universally readable internet sites.

Hot Wire
An electro-mechanical device used for highly precise and smooth-edged foam cutting.

Home Page
The first page you arrive at when visiting the numerous sites on the Internet. From the home page of a particular Internet site, you are typically directed deeper into that site to find additional information. Some sites are comprised of only a Home Page while others, such as that of Star Case, are comprised of several pages beyond the Home Page.

Help Desk
Within the Star Case World Wide Web site, this page is a place you can ask questions, register for product drawings, send E-mail directly to Star Case, and answer questions that will better allow us to determine your exact Product Protection needs.

HDPE
A shortened way of referring to High Density Polyethylene the plastic resin material used as the outer walls on Carry Light & Star Light Cases. Star Case HDPE is extruded in a fluted design and has a tensile strength of 400 pounds per square inch.

Hand Slot
A special foam cut-out, at the sides of components for removing the item from the case.

Girth
With regards to a 6-sided case, the sum total of the shortest dimension x 2, plus the next to the shortest dimensions x 2, plus the longest dimension. Girth is used to determine size freight-ability.

Gasket
A neoprene rubber material of precise size to fit the 3/8' aluminum groove half of STAR CASE's tongue and groove valance. This provides for better environmental isolation at the critical closure points of the case.

Friction Glide
Glide is accomplished non-mechanically. Wood against wood or metal against metal. Alternative is mechanical ball-bearing roller glides.

Fragility
A word used to define the relative strength of an item to be cased. A low fragility factor means strong and durable while a high fragility factor means fragile and delicate.

Footprint
That surface of case which occupies the ground or a table-top. (The width and depth of the case.)

Foam-to-Foam
A description of a particular measurement, inside from foam-to-foam vs. inside from wood-to-wood.

Foam Blocks
Specially cut polyfoam or high density polyethylene foam blocks used at strategic positions within a case interior to provide added support and cushioning.

Filler Panel
A pre-cut panel of aluminum for filling E.I.A. rackmount space. Commonly used for occupying additional vertical space. STAR CASE has available 1 and 2 E.I.A. space filler panels as options.

Fiberglass
A high strength resin reinforced material used as an outer laminate on Star Cases. Fiberglass used by Star Case has a stucco (pebbly) finish for superior resistance to marring and scratching. Star Case fiberglass also has exceptional bonding strength to plywood and its expansion & contraction coefficients are virtually the same as plywood thus negating delamination in extreme heat, cold and high s...

False Lid
Isolated compartment in the lid of a case which is hidden by a hinged foam covered plywood door. Door secures via button-snaps, velcro or small catch.

False Bottom
A false floor at the bottom of a case which hides a lower compartment or cut-out for cable storage. False bottom is fabricated of foam covered plywood .

Extrusion
A shaped and formed piece of aluminum material. Commonly refers to STAR CASE outer angle aluminum extruded shape or tongue and groove aluminum valance extruded shape.

Expo Star
Trade name of specialized container line from STAR CASE. Expo Star Cases are available in 1/8', 1/4', 3/8' & 1/2' thicknesses. Telescopic lid construction with nylon strap/buckle closure standard.

Etha
Short form of Ethafoam, a tradename for open-celled, rigid expanded polyethylene foam.

Embarc
Embarc is STAR CASES trade name for olive drab 3/8' laminate plywood military application cases with flat black hardware. Several environmental specifications are addressed in the manufacture of Embarc Cases.

Edging
Term for the outer 'angle'. All outer 90 degree angles, form the edging of the case.

Double Ramp
An option on STAR CASES which provides a dual ramped entry device into the front opening of a Style 'E' case. See Options section of Custom Reference Guide for a more detailed description.

Double-Angle
Term for inner and outer aluminum angle material extrusion. Angle is actually dual-edged, providing support from the inside and the outside of the case.

Die Cut
A precision cut-out made in case foam that matches the item to be encased accurately. A pre-cut, steel rule template is typically used  as the 'die'.

Density
A word used to define the relative compactness of the cell structure of foam materials. Higher density, rated in pounds per square inch, is for higher weight items and lower density is for lighter weight items.

Cubed Foam
Also called, 'diced' foam. Polyester foam which has been cut into 1' cubes. Only the corners are left attached so you have the ability to 'pluck' cubes to achieve a desired space.
