The loach is a small fish (Cobitis tartatula) inhabiting small clear streams in England, and formerly esteemed as a dainty food. A smaller species, the spined loach or groundling (Corbitis toenia), also occurs in England. The name loach is also given to the eel-pout (Lota vulgaris) and the three-bearded rockling (Motella vulgaris).
