  1. stiffness
[n] - the physical property of being inflexible and hard to bend 2. [n] - the property of moving with pain or difficulty

  3. Stiffness
The resistance of a structure to deformation. Under a given load, the higher the stiffness of an implant then the smaller its deformation, the smaller the displacement of the fracture fragments and the lower the strain generated in the repair tissue. Excessive tissue strain can interfere with healin...

  4. Stiffness
Measure of resistance of plastics to bending. It includes both plastic and elastic behavior, so it is an apparent value of elastic modulus rather than a true value. (ASTM D-747)

  5. Stiffness
Stiffness is the ratio of change of force (or torque) to the corresponding change in translation (or rotational) deflection of an elastic element. Stiffness is often defined with respect to static or dynamic loading conditions. When a force is applied to a structure, there is a displacement in the di...

  6. Stiffness
Measure of the resistance of a material to deformation. The ratio of applied stress to resulting strain for a particular material.

  7. stiffness
the amount of applied force per unit of displacement of a compliant body Category: Automation (includes telecommunications and computers) • bending resistance determined by measuring the bending force on a rectangular test piece of paper according to a standardised procedure Category:...

  8. Stiffness
Term for the workability of a mix. The ease that a material requires to move it when hot.

  9. Stiffness
Stiff'ness noun The quality or state of being stiff; as, the stiffness of cloth or of paste; stiffness of manner; stiffness of character. « The vices of old age have the stiffness of it too.» South.

  12. Stiffness
Stiffness or flexibility is the pliability or rigidity of an object — the extent to which it resists bending. They are complementary concepts so the more flexible an object is, the less stiff it is. They are measured as the amount of bending or deformation of a body when a force is applied at a g...

  13. Stiffness
The resistance to deformation of a structural member which can be measured by the ratio of the applied force to the corresponding displacement.

  14. Stiffness
relationship describing motor displacement from a fixed position due to an applied torque of specified value.

  15. stiffness
in a system in which friction and inertia are negligible, quotient of force at a point by the in-phase displacement at the point, caused by the force, during sinusoidal motion NOTE - In the case of torsional stiffness, 'force' and 'displacement' respectively are replaced by 'torque' and 'angular displacement'.

This day in history: The Queen Mary made her maiden voyage, on the Southampton-Cherbourg-New York route, on 27 May 1936. The passenger accommodation emphasised the first two classes, cabin and tourist. The propulsion machinery of the ship produced a massive 160,000 SHP and gave it a speed of over 30 knots. Despite expectations that the ship would try to break speed records on its first voyage a thick fog destroyed any hope of this. The Queen Mary spent a short time in drydock during July whilst adjustments were made to the propellers and turbines. When the ship returned to service, in August, it made a record voyage from Bishop's Rock to Ambrose light and took the Blue Riband from the Normandie. read more
