The name given to a meal served late afternoon to early evening which is a mixture of afternoon tea
High tea was formerly the meal served with cold meats, vegetables, and pastry in substitution for dinner. In 1893 the Daily Telegraph carried a description of a high tea thus:
[n] - (British) substantial early evening meal including tea

a late afternoon or early evening meal similar to a light supper.
