Mont-de-piete is a name for banks of charity which lend money on pledges at a low rate of interest, and whose aim is purely philanthropic. These institutions were established to prevent the scandal and abuse of usury, and existed in Italy, France, the Netherlands, Spain, etc. In Britain pawnbrokers took the place of monts-de-piete.
