Japanese word for cartoon. In the west, it means any form of cartoon made with a distinctive style of animation. Sometimes also used for Manga.

Japanese word for beautiful girl.

Catgirl
A human character which represents a cat. Catgirls are characterized by their pointy ears and a tail.

Doujinshi
Fan-made manga that is based on official manga/anime. A majority are adult themed.

ED
Short for Ending Music.

Fansub
Stands for fan-made subtitling for anime series. Fansubbing usually involves various different groups, each with their own style of subbing.

Japanese word for foreigner.

Hikikomori
Japanese word to describe someone who severely refuses to go out into the daylight.

Katana
A japanese long sword.

Kami
Japanese word for god.

Manga
Japanese for comic. In the west, it stands for any comic book that was made in Japan.

Mecha
A genre of anime which involves gigantic robots. A good example of this would be the Gundam series.

Japanese word for good morning.

Short for opening music.

OVA
Original Video Animation. These are a series of add-on anime episodes for the TV series.

Senpai
Honorific used to address someone of higher status in an organization. May also be used to address someone of higher school status.

Shoujo
Genre of anime that is specifically aimed towards girls.

Super Deformed
Refers to the art style used in various Manga/Anime where the character

Yaoi
Genre of anime that involve homosexual males. Usually erotic.
