   Phase Shift Keying - a radio modulation technique which advances and retards the phase of a radio carrier to convey information. The information delivered at each change of phase is referred to as a symbol. The number of different phase shift values determines the ratio of information bit rate to PSK symbol rate. BPSK (Binary PSK) delivers one bit per symbol. QPSK (Quadrature PSK) delivers two bits per symbol since the four phase shift values represent 00, 01, 10 and 11. BPSK and QPSK are used in the UMTS UTRA radio technology. Eight-way PSK, as used in EDGE, delivers three bits per symbol since the eight phase values represent 000, 001, 010, 011, 100, 101, 110 and 111. GSM uses a variant of PSK called GMSK (Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying). Contrast FM and AM.
