    IgM: Immunoglobulin M, a major class of immunoglobulins. IgM includes the antibodies that are usually produced first in an immune response and are later replaced by other types of antibodies.

    (= macroglobulin) An IgM molecule (970 kD) is built up from five IgG type monomers joined together, with the assistance of J chains, to form a cyclic pentamer. IgM binds complement and a single IgM molecule bound to a cell surface can lyse that cell. IgM is usually produced first in an immune response before IgG. The human red cell isoantibodies are IgM antibodies. Heavy chain ( mchain) is rather larger than the heavy chains of other immunoglobulins.

This day in history:
On 10th February 1996, a computer, Deep Blue, beat Russian Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess player on the planet, and mankind’s place in the order of things was reshuffled. The match immediately became an iconic symbol of the advances made in artificial intelligence and supercomputing. Kasparov has since retired, like Deep Blue, which now resides in a museum. He has become a vocal advocate for democracy in today’s Russia. read more
