Look up: gene-expression

  1. Gene expression
The process of producing a protein from its DNA- and mRNA-coding sequences.
    Found on http://filebox.vt.edu/cals/cses/chagedor

  2. gene expression
The transcription of mRNA from the DNA sequence of a gene and the subsequent translation of that mRNA to give the protein gene product. Less strictly it can mean the transcription step alone.

  3. Gene expression
Evidence or manifestation of a genetically controlled characteristic. All of the chromosomal genes in an organism are not active at all times. In a plant nucleus as little as 5% of the DNA may be producing protein at any one time.

  4. gene expression
[n] - conversion of the information encoded in a gene first into messenger RNA and then to a protein
    Found on http://www.webdictionary.co.uk/definitio

  5. Gene expression
Gene expression: The translation of information encoded in a gene into protein or RNA. Expressed genes include genes that are transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA) and then translated into protein, as well as genes that are transcribed into types of RNA such as transfer RNA (tRNA) and ribosomal RNA ...

  6. gene expression
The full use of the information in a gene via transcription and translation leading to production of a protein and hence the appearance of the phenotype determined by that gene. Gene expression is assumed to be controlled at various points in the sequence leading to protein synthesis and this control is thought to be the major determinant of cellular differentiation in eukaryotes.

  7. gene expression
<molecular biology> The full use of the information in a gene via transcription and translation leading to production of a protein and hence the appearance of the phenotype determined by that gene. Gene expression is assumed to be controlled at various points in the sequence leading to protein...

  8. gene expression
Type: Term Definitions: 1. the detectable effect of a gene. 2. appearance of an inherited trait; for many genetic (recessiveness, hypostasis, parastasis) and environmental (the absence of pertinent challenges) reasons, a gene may not be expressed at all. In those circumstances, it will have no impact on Darwinian evolution. &nbs...

  9. gene expression
The process by which a genes coded information is converted into the structures present and operating in the cell. Expressed genes include those that are transcribed into mRNA and then translated into protein and those that are transcribed into RNA but not translated into protein (e.g., transfer and ribosomal RNAs).

  10. Gene expression
The process by which a gene's coded information is converted into the structures present and operating in the cell. Expressed genes include those that are transcribed into mRNA and then translated into protein and those that are transcribed into RNA but not translated into protein (e.g., transfer and ribosomal RNAs).

  11. gene expression
The process by which a gene gets turned on in a cell to make RNA and proteins. Gene expression may be measured by looking at the RNA, or the protein made from the RNA, or what the protein does in a cell.
    Found on http://www.cancer.gov/dictionary?expand=

  12. Gene expression
`Gene expression` is the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product. These products are often proteins, but in non-protein coding genes such as ribosomal RNA (rRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA) or Small nuclear RNA (snRNA) genes, the product is a functiona...

  13. genetic expression
(from the article `cell`) The transcription of the genetic code from DNA to RNA, and the translation of that code from RNA into protein, exerts the greatest influence on the ... Not all genes in a cell are active in protein production at any given time. Gene action can be switched on or off in response to the cell`s stage of ... [2 r...

11 February 2012

This day in history:
On 11th February, 1858, a 14 year old French peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous claimed to have seen visions of the Virgin Mary at her native Lourdes. She also revealed that the waters of a spring near a grotto in Lourdes had been given healing powers by the Virgin. Eventually, the Roman Catholic church decided that the visions were authentic. Franz Werfel wrote the novel, Song of Bernadette, based on the story of Bernadette's visions. read more
