Look up: gene-expression

  1. Gene expression
The process of producing a protein from its DNA- and mRNA-coding sequences.
    Found on http://filebox.vt.edu/cals/cses/chagedor

  2. gene expression
The transcription of mRNA from the DNA sequence of a gene and the subsequent translation of that mRNA to give the protein gene product. Less strictly it can mean the transcription step alone.

  3. Gene expression
Evidence or manifestation of a genetically controlled characteristic. All of the chromosomal genes in an organism are not active at all times. In a plant nucleus as little as 5% of the DNA may be producing protein at any one time.

  4. gene expression
[n] - conversion of the information encoded in a gene first into messenger RNA and then to a protein

  5. Gene expression
Gene expression: The translation of information encoded in a gene into protein or RNA. Expressed genes include genes that are transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA) and then translated into protein, as well as genes that are transcribed into types of RNA such as transfer RNA (tRNA) and ribosomal RNA (rRNA) that are not translated into protein. Gene ...

  6. gene expression
The full use of the information in a gene via transcription and translation leading to production of a protein and hence the appearance of the phenotype determined by that gene. Gene expression is assumed to be controlled at various points in the sequence leading to protein synthesis and this control is thought to be the major determinant of cellular differentiation in eukaryotes.

  8. Gene expression
`Gene expression` is the process by which the inheritable information in a gene, such as the DNA sequence, is made into a functional gene product, such as protein or RNA. Several steps in the gene expression process may be modulated, including the transcription step and the post-translational modification of a protein. Gene regulation gives the cell control over structure and function, and is the basis for cellular differentiation, morphogenesis...

  9. gene expression
The process by which a genes coded information is converted into the structures present and operating in the cell. Expressed genes include those that are transcribed into mRNA and then translated into protein and those that are transcribed into RNA but not translated into protein (e.g., transfer and ribosomal RNAs).

  10. Gene expression
The process by which a gene's coded information is converted into the structures present and operating in the cell. Expressed genes include those that are transcribed into mRNA and then translated into protein and those that are transcribed into RNA but not translated into protein (e.g., transfer and ribosomal RNAs).

21 November 2009

This day in history:
On 21st November 1974 the Provisional IRA plants bombs in two Birmingham pubs: the Mulberry Bush and the Tavern in the Town. Twenty-one people die and 182 are injured. A few minutes before the explosions a warning had been telephoned to the local newspaper, the Birmingham Post and Mail, but it was far too late. The first Birmingham bomb, at the Mulberry Bush pub in the basement of the Rotunda, a 20-storey office and retail complex and it exploded six minutes after the telephone warning. There was not enough time for police to clear the area. Earlier that year nine soldiers were killed when a bomb exploded on a coach on the M62 near Bradford, while two bombs in Guildford killed four soldiers and injured scores of other people. read more
