  7. fibrin
Monomeric fibrin (323 kD) is produced from fibrinogen by proteolytic removal of the highly charged (aspartate- and glutamate-rich) fibrinopeptidesby thrombin, in the presence of calcium ions. The monomer readily polymerizes to form long insoluble fibres (23nm periodicity; half-staggered) that are stabilized by covalent crosslinking (by Factor XIII, plasma transglutaminase). The fibrin gel acts as a haemostatic plug.

Fi'brin noun [ Confer French fibrine . See Fiber .] (Physiol. Chem.) 1. A white, albuminous, fibrous substance, formed in the coagulation of the blood either by decomposition of fibrinogen, or from the union of fibrinogen and paraglobulin which exist separately in the blood. It is insoluble in water, but is readily digestible in gastric and pancreatic juice. 2. T ...

  11. Fibrin
`Fibrin` is a protein involved in the clotting of blood. It is a fibrillar protein that is polymerised to form a `mesh` that forms a hemostatic plug or clot (in conjunction with platelets) over a wound site. Fibrin is made from its zymogen `fibrinogen`, a soluble plasma glycoprotein that is synthesised by the liver. Processes in the coagulation cascade activate the zymogen prothrombin to the serine protease thrombin, which is responsible for con...

  17. fibrin
An elastic filamentous protein derived from fibrinogen by the action of thrombin, which releases fibrinopeptides A and B from fibrinogen in the coagulation of blood; a component of thrombi, vegetations, and acute inflammatory exudates such as in diphtheria and lobar pneumonia. [L. fibra, fiber]

  18. fibrin
Red blood cells trapped by fibrin An insoluble, fibrous protein that is essential to blood clotting. Developed in the blood from a soluble protein, fibrinogen, fibrin is laid down at the site of a wound in the form of a mesh, which then dries and hardnes so that the bleeding stops.

22 November 2009

This day in history:
On Friday, November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At his death, the 35th president was 46 years old and had served less than three years in office. Despite this intimate experience of events surrounding the death of John F. Kennedy, the nation failed to achieve closure. Oswald never confessed, and the facts of the case remain mysterious. The Warren Commission's conclusion Oswald acted alone failed to satisfy the public. In 1976, the House of Representatives' Select Committee on Assassinations reopened investigation of the murder. The Committee reported that Lee Harvey Oswald probably was part of a conspiracy that may have involved organized crime. read more
