  4. dB
Communication engineers like to express large power ratios in logarithmic decibels (dB). Every factor of 10 in magnitude is a ratio of 10 dB. Thus, an antenna gain of 1015 has a corresponding logarithmic gain of 150 dB. The gain is the product of 10 and the logarithm (to base 10) of the ratio.

  8. dB
Decibel. A logarithmic ratio of two signals or values, usually refers to power, but also voltage and current. When it is calculated for power it is 10log10 (P1/P2) and for voltage in a constant impedance situation 20log10 (V1/V2).

  15. DB
A dB or Decibel is a unit-less measure that represents a ratio between two measurements. Telecommunications technology uses dBm to express a ratio between two powers, an input power and an output power in milliwatts. The dB scale is logarithmic. A 3 dB reduction in power from the input to the output port of a cable equates to half of the power being lost, due to heat, radiation, noise etc. A 10dBm reading represents a 10 times reduction in power. 20dBm represents a 100 times reduction in power, and so on.

10 February 2012

This day in history:
On 10th February 1996, a computer, Deep Blue, beat Russian Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess player on the planet, and mankind’s place in the order of things was reshuffled. The match immediately became an iconic symbol of the advances made in artificial intelligence and supercomputing. Kasparov has since retired, like Deep Blue, which now resides in a museum. He has become a vocal advocate for democracy in today’s Russia. read more
