Look up: UPWELLING

  1. upwelling
The raising of benthic nutrients to the surface waters. This occurs in regions where the flow of water brings currents of differing temperatures together, and increases productivity of the ecosystem.
    Found on http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/glossary/gl

  2. upwelling
The rising of water toward the surface from subsurface layers of a body of water. Upwelling is most prominent where persistent wind blows parallel to a coastline so that the resultant wind-driven current sets away from the coast ( see Ekman spiral ). It constitutes a distinct climatogenetic influence by bringing colder water to the surface. = Over the ocean, upwelling occurs wherever the wind circulation is cyclonic , but is appreciable only in areas where that circulation is relatively permanen...

  3. Upwelling
The movement of nutrient-rich water from a specified depth to the surface
    Found on http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/marinebio/glo

  4. Upwelling
a process where subsurface, nutrient-rich, and usually cooler water is carried upward into the ocean's surface layers.
    Found on http://www.coralrealm.com/viewpage.asp?p

  5. Upwelling
The process by which water rises from a deeper to a shallower DEPTH, usually as a result of offshore surface water flow. It is most prominent where persistent wind blows parallel to a COASTLINE so that the resultant Ekman transport moves surface water away from the COAST. See Figure5.

  6. upwelling
The vertical motion of water in the ocean by which subsurface water of lower temperature and greater density moves toward the surface of the ocean. Upwelling occurs most commonly among the western coastlines of continents, but may occur anywhere in the ocean. Upwelling results when winds blowing nearly parallel to a continental coastline transport the light surface water away from the coast. Subsurface water of greater density and lower temperature replaces the surface water, and exerts a consid...

  7. Upwelling
The vertical motion of water in the ocean by which subsurface water of lower temperature and greater density moves toward the surface of the ocean. Upwelling occurs most commonly along the western coastlines of continents, but may occur anywhere in the ocean. Upwelling results when winds blowing nearly parallel to a continental coastline transport the light surface water away from the coast. Subsurface water of greater density and lower temperature replaces the surface water, and exerts a consid...

  8. Upwelling
The physical process in near-shore ocean systems of rising of nutrients and colder bottom waters to the surface because of constant wind patterns along the shoreline. Upwelling areas are highly productive of plankton and fish.

  9. upwelling
(from the article `marine ecosystem`) The most productive waters of the world are in regions of upwelling. Upwelling in coastal waters brings nutrients toward the surface. Phytoplankton ... Upwelling is a seasonal phenomenon in the Indian Ocean because of the monsoon regime. During the southwest monsoon, upwelling occurs off the Somali ...

  10. Upwelling
The movement of nutrient-rich deep seawater to the ocean's surface.

  11. UPWELLING
The process by which water rises from a lower to a higher depth, usually as a result of divergence and offshore currents. It influences climate by bringing colder, more nutrient-rich water to the surface. A vital factor of the El Niño event.
    Found on http://www.weather.com/glossary/u.html

  12. Upwelling
In ocean dynamics, the upward motion of sub-surface water toward the surface of the ocean. This is often a source of cold, nutrient-rich water. Strong upwelling occurs along the equator where easterly winds are present. Upwelling also can occur along coastlines, and is important to fisheries and birds in California and Peru.

22 November 2009

This day in history:
On Friday, November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot as he rode in a motorcade through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At his death, the 35th president was 46 years old and had served less than three years in office. Despite this intimate experience of events surrounding the death of John F. Kennedy, the nation failed to achieve closure. Oswald never confessed, and the facts of the case remain mysterious. The Warren Commission's conclusion Oswald acted alone failed to satisfy the public. In 1976, the House of Representatives' Select Committee on Assassinations reopened investigation of the murder. The Committee reported that Lee Harvey Oswald probably was part of a conspiracy that may have involved organized crime. read more
