  4. PoC
Push-to-talk over cellular. A “walkie-talkie` or PMR service for mobile phone networks. Motorola iDEN is a proprietary technology which has supported PoC capabilities for many years and PMR systems have always supported them. It is now possible to support push-to-talk using packet radio services such as GPRS & EGPRS (on GSM, EDGE and UMTS networks) and the packet services of cdmaOne and cdma2000. PoC uses VoIP (voice over IP) and SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) with mobile-specific protocols such as SigComp. The service is half duplex - only one party can speak at a time. PoC is currently being specified by 3GPP for GSM & UMTS, where it uses the IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) in the core network, and by OMA across all mobile networks. Packet mode makes it very economical in bandwidth terms and therefore attractive not just for vertical sector services, as for PMR, but for chat services similar to IM (instant messaging) and SMS messaging. Push-to-talk allows group calling, multiple groups at the same time, dynamic group creation by users, and fleet management. It could replace PMR, the `roger and out` radio used by public safety and vertical sector users, including recent standard s such as TETRA and TETRAPOL. Push to talk is bandwidth-efficient because it uses packet radio. This makes it cost-efficient. Push-to-talk services has potential for both horizontal markets and vertical markets - where it may compete with TETRA, GSM-R and other PMR-like technologies such as iDEN

8 January 2009

This day in history:
Rationing began on 8 January 1940. Each person was allowed a specific mount of basic foods. In July 1940 a complete ban was put on the making or selling of iced cakes, and in September the manufacture of `candied peel` or `crystallised cherries` meant the death knell for the traditional wedding cake. On 1st December 1941 the Ministry of Food introduced the points rationing scheme for items such as canned meat, fish and vegetables at first. Everyone was given 16 points a month, later raised to twenty, to spend as wished at any shop that had the items wanted. read more
