    The Open Systems Interconnection reference model divides network functions into protocol layers, each layer dependent and building on the services of the layer beneath it. The OSI model is important for the principles of protocol layering and service interfaces and for definitions such as ASN.1 (part of OSI, but used in other protocols such as GSM). OSI failed to become the world framework for communications but many of its ideas live on in the more recent IPS standards.

This day in history:
On 10th February 1996, a computer, Deep Blue, beat Russian Garry Kasparov, the greatest chess player on the planet, and mankind’s place in the order of things was reshuffled. The match immediately became an iconic symbol of the advances made in artificial intelligence and supercomputing. Kasparov has since retired, like Deep Blue, which now resides in a museum.
