  4. MMS
Multimedia Messaging Service. A full multi-media extension of the mobile messaging concept pioneered by SMS. MMS is defined by 3GPP (see 3GPP specification 23.140) and the OMA (Open Mobile Alliance see specification WAP-205-MMSArchOverview). It calls up a wide variety of existing media format standards such as MPEG (sound) and JPEG (pictures). MMS uses MIME and the SMIL standard allowing the various formats to be orchestrated together and can use OMA DRM (Digital Rights Management) to protect IPR in content. MMS can be applied to any mobile system which supports IP service. In contrast, SMS and its extension EMS, rely on inherent features of GSM. MMS supports formatted text, sounds and both fixed and moving images. MMS is being rolled out on existing networks using GPRS as the IP service carrier, although it was originally designed for higher bandwidth UMTS Third Generation networks. See MM1 for more about the radio-side interface and MM2, MM3, MM4, MM5, MM6, MM7 and MM8 for the fixed-side interfaces.

9 February 2012

This day in history:
At 7.01pm on 9 February 1996, the IRA ended its 17-month ceasefire with a blast that rocked east London, injured more than 100 people, one critically, and thrust Northern Ireland back into political ferment. After one hour of shock and hectic checking with the security forces who, like the Government, were taken 'completely by surprise', Prime Minister John Major attacked the bombing as 'an appalling outrage'. He called upon Sinn Fein and the IRA to condemn unequivocally those who planted the bomb near South Quay railway station on the Isle of Dogs. read more
