   An invasive prenatal examination in which a special instrument called an amnioscope is inserted into the amniotic sac through the cervical canal so that the fetus and amniotic fluid can be observed. The amniotic fluid is being checked for meconium, as any meconium in the womb can distress the fetus and cause complications.
